I came across a great article today written by Miguel Sousa about the benefits of OpenType (.otf) over TrueType (.ttf) fonts. I never put much thought into the difference between the two font extensions, although I have always leaned towards using OpenType fonts when available knowing that is a more recent format. Miguel goes into great detail on the differences. The main difference that struck me the most as a RIA developer was that OpenType fonts can be up to 50% smaller than TrueType fonts. When embedding fonts or loading external fonts into a multilingual Flash application this piece of knowledge could trim off a significant amount of load time. Read more about the differences here.

Home Hardware recently launched their Design Centre, a collection of applications geared towards helping homeowners research a huge range of products available at their local store. The Design Centre includes the Beauti-Tone Paint Home Designer and the Beauti-Tone Paint Colour Finder, which I blogged about in the previous post, as well as two new applications, the HomeWorks Visualizer and Your Scrapbook.

HomeWorks Visualizer is similar to the Beauti-Tone Paint Home Designer in that it allows the customer to apply product to a variety of home exteriors and interior rooms, including kitchens, bathrooms, bedrooms and more. HomeWorks Visualizer includes a wide range of product categories including siding, stucco, brick, stone, roofing, decking, garage doors, concrete coatings, paint, doors, windows, flooring, ceiling, countertops, wall coverings and tiles. Users can save their projects, email them to a friend, and request a home install from their local Home Hardware store.

You can use the HomeWorks Visualizer here: http://www.homehardware.ca/index/renoworks-homeworks

Your Scrapbook is a great place for members of the Home Hardware site to store photos they find inspirational into their very own scrapbook. Using the Image Grabber utility, which can be launched on any website using a bookmark, a member can add photos on the fly while they are surfing any web site.

You can use Your Scrapbook here: http://www.homehardware.ca/index/renoworks-scrapbook
Note: You will need to register on the Home Hardware site before you can use the Scrapbook.

We developed the HomeWorks Visualizer & Your Scrapbook using Adobe Flex, Java and db4o. We developed the Image Grabber using JSP, JavaScript & HTML. Congratulations to everyone at RenoWorks for bringing this project to life.

While working at Rare Method our team invested a lot of effort into designing and developing this great interactive Flash and HTML/CSS hybrid site. ArtPad was commissioned by the Calgary Glenbow Museum for the purpose of informing and interesting youth in contemporary art. I’m not sure when this site finally went live, but chances are that you have never seen or even heard about it, as I was unable to find a press release or news article anywhere. Take a few minutes to check it out. I think you will enjoy it and maybe learn a thing or two about contemporary art.

Yesterday MBUSA.com launched their website redesign. The new site is a major face lift from the old version, which was beginning to look outdated in comparison to many of its competitors. Every single element of the site has been upgraded and built completely in Flash, improving the overall user experience throughout.

I worked on the initial stages of this redesign at Critical Mass over two years ago. My involvement at the time was building a working prototype of the site in Flash. Only a few vehicles could be selectable back then, but overall the site’s design has not changed too much. The Mercedes-Benz’ development team has done a great job of finishing it off.

Congratulations to everyone involved in creating this site.

The end of the long anticipated wait for Adobe Creative Suite 3 is almost here. I got my first glimpse of the goodness to come in Las Vegas at Adobe MAX 2006. I expect the differences between Adobe and Macromedia products will finally come to an end as the best of both worlds are merged into one. Of course I’m mainly interested in Flash CS3. I never managed to make it onto the beta testing list and the Flash 9 alpha was Flash 8 with ActionScript 3 support, which was fun to play around with, but boasted no new interface enhancements and other goodies. Friends who did make it onto the beta have told me about some of the new features and I’m pretty stoked to try them out for myself.

I thought this day would never come. The soon to be award winning Rolex.com redesign has finally been launched.

Before leaving Critical Mass I spent around three months on the Rolex team helping out on the development side of this site. Although the site appears to be completly Flash to the common user, it supports deep linking and it is search engine friendly. If the user does not have Flash installed it degrades gracefully to an HTML version.

The design is incredible, featuring stunning photographs of scenery from around the world as well as many very gorgeous models, and of course plenty of beautiful watches that most of us will never be able to afford.

Congratulations to everyone involved in creating this site.

Earlier today I received a news letter from ActionScript.org. This threw me off for a second because the only emails I get from them are job postings. The email template was well done and mimics their new site redesign, which is quite nice compared to their old outdated design. If you have already forgotten what it looked like, you can kind of make it out here using the Wayback Machine.

I am currently in the process of reading the excerpt from Tom Muck’s Flash Remoting: The Definitive Guide. This excerpt is part of a new partnership between ActionScript.org and O’Reilly. It seems like a good deal for both sides. I am sure this will drive a lot more traffic to ActionScript.org and inevitably lead to more book sales for O’Reilly. So far the first few pages of the excerpt have been very well written and quite informative.

While reading the article I have realized that I will have to change my job title. Now that Flex has been released I am no longer a Flash Developer, but instead, a Client-Side ActionScript Programmer. I think that this is a much more dynamic sounding title, but it will take some getting used to after referring to myself as a Flash Developer for so long.

I am quite excited about the freshened up ActionScript.org site and enjoy having the ability to preview books before investing in them. Of course O’Reilly is one of my favorite publishers, so this is good news to me.

A friend of mine just showed me Adobe’s new icons for branding their next product line. The concept is cool. It reminds me of the Periodic Table of the Elements and obviously borrows some ideas from Macromedia’s old set of logos, making it easy for a consumer to determine that a product was part of the Macromedia’s line because of their similarities. This relation was not so apparent with Adobe’s products.

Overall, this new approach to branding by Adobe seems much better than the old swirls and feathers of the past, but I don’t really understand the color wheel. I’m assuming that it has something to do with the relation between products, but I cant recognize what that relation is, only that Adobe has left the products that they acquired from Macromedia the same color that they were before.

Roll over the icons to view the related product.
I’m really going to miss working with him, but I’m also very happy for him. This will be a great experience and I really can’t blame him for not turning it down. Plus, it is freezing up here in Calgary. He just told me he is going to be meeting with Mike Chambers and Ted Patrick later this week and that Yahoo! already has the latest beta (not alpha) of Flash CS3 (Blaze). Scott you lucky bastard!

Congratulations and the best of luck Scott!

P.S. Make sure you say hi to Schiller and Dr. Yes for me.

I just got back to Calgary from Max this morning. This was my first Max and I really enjoyed it. The “marriage” of Adobe and Macromedia seems to have produced some good looking children. Macromedia’s applications now have an Adobe feel to them and even Photoshop is sporting some new menu looks.

Copy and paste between Adobe’s programs is great. There was an example of copying a Photoshop image into Dreamweaver. Dreamweaver opens up an optimize for web window in which you can specify the compresion and file path for the pasted image. Dreamweaver then creates the href tag to the saved location. PSDs can be imported into Flash preserving the folders and layers. Flash gives the user an option to save layers as movieclips and also allows for maintaining the edibility of text fields. Blend modes also convert to Flash’s native format, so more adjustments can be made. The transition of files from design to development is about to get much easier. Fireworks is also very impressive. It is now a great way for designers to layout Flex applications using component “templates” that are incuded right in the software. These templates support 9 scale just like the Flex components do. The designer can build a slideshow of the application using invisible buttons that target selected slides. This slideshow can be output into HTML and sent to a client for review. After the application is design is signed off, Fireworks exports is in MXML. This is going to save so much time for developers. Now, the work only has to be done once. That seems to be the main goal of this whole Adobe and Macromedia merger. Make more money by making the software everyone already uses work together seamlessly. I will soon be able to get right into coding without wasting a bunch of time mimicking flats. I’m stoked!

I attended all of the Apollo talks and am very excited about about it. I always wanted to learn a desktop application development language so that I had the knowledge to build offline apps. Now I dont have to waste the time learning a new language when I can just use my existing knowledge in ActionScript, XML, CSS, HTML and JavaScript to build cross platform software. Apollo installs into the users system just like any other application would. In windows it provides the user with icons in the taskbar, start menu, add remove programs window and an icon on the desktop. The same deal with Mac. Linux will be supported in the near future as well. You can use system chrome or completly customize the look. The Flash Player now supports an HTML renderer. This render is the same one that Safari uses. You can modify the bitmap data that the render produces just like it was a movieclip. You can scale it, rotate it, blur it, etc. and it still refreshes in this state. Now the sky is the limit! More info can be found on MXNA in the Apollo smart category and at www.adobe.com/go/apollo. There are some images of Apollo on Flickr.

There was some good entertainment at Max including the Blue Man Group, Ben Forta in a Scorpion costume, a couple of great pool side parties at the Venetian and The Palms, and some clubbing at Rain nightclub. I had never been to a Vegas nightclub before and it really put anything we have in Calgary to shame. The dance floor was surrounded by a moat of fog and had flame throwers mounted above it. The couches where made of water beds. Private rooms surrounded the higher levels of the club. I do think Adobe should have brought down some of the Playboy Playmates to help even out the male to female ratio on the dance-floor.

All in all, I had an excellent time. Las Vegas was a great place to hold the Max convention and I will definitely go again.

I just stumbled across http://programmermeetdesigner.com/. This seems like a very useful site for those freelance jobs where one of your clients comes to you for a full site and you are only interested in doing the development side of things. Now you can team up with a designer who has little knowledge about development and a greater knowledge of design. I am sure you client will be pleased when you deliver them a site that does not look like it came from the internet of the 90s.

“This site was created to unite programmers and designers because rarely is a person good at both programming and designing. PMD helps programmers and designers partner up to make websites and web applications that look and work great. Now content writers and entrepreneurs can also join up to find people to work with.” programmermeetdesigner.com

Well, I gave it a shot. The Canadian Flash Developer Forum did not take off like I wanted it to. With an abundance of other Flash related forums that have been around for ages, I guess it makes more sense to join one of them. Anyways, here it is! my first blog. This blog will be mainly dedicated to Flash Development so don’t expect any boring information about my life. With the release of Flash 9 Alpha and ActionScript 3 you can expect to see a lot of entries regarding them. I figure seeing as how I will be learning AS3, I might as well post some code examples (tutorials) over the next few weeks, so keep an eye out for them.
